Here are what you all have sent me as your potential topics:
Ryan: Year Round Schooling, Multi-Age classrooms, and 4 Day School Week
Marissa: Standards-Based Grading, Homework Debate, Looping
Mariah: Year-Round Schooling, Multi-Aged Classrooms, Creationism...Evolution
Jennifer: 4 Day School Week, Elimination of Fine Arts, Class Within a Class
Narrowed hers down to 4 Day School Week, and since she was the first to give a definitive topic choice, she has first dibs. :-)
Amber: Looping, Multi-Aged Classrooms, 4 Day School Week
Make your arguments for why you want the topic you've chosen! I'll monitor and touch base with each of you later today to see how the choices have panned out! :-)
I would like to do my position paper on looping. I believe that looping is both effective and ineffective. In the paper I want to touch base on what exactly looping is, how it is effective (the benefits of it), and how it is ineffective (the cons of it). There is much debate on whether teachers should spend more than one school year with their students. In the paper I will state my opinions and also give statistics on looping.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be very interesting to learn about looping. I don't really know what it is because this is only the second education class I am taking. But I am excited to learn about it! I think you have a great start to your paper! The flow and format you want to go by looks great!
DeleteWhen I was in elementary school I had a teacher who was my 5th grade teacher actually become my 7th grade teacher. I think it wold be beneficial because she already knew our personalities, who we probably shouldn't sit by, and how we learned best so at the beginning of the school year we were able to jump right in and get started. Also we already knew what she expected of us.
DeleteI also think it would be very interesting to learn about looping and the debate of the pros and cons. I am interested to see your opinion on it!
DeleteI was actually thinking about doing looping! You beat me to it. I think it is a very interesting idea.
DeleteI would like to do year round schooling. I have always been interested in that topic and I have always wondered what the results would be if schools were to change from a "normal" school to a year round schooling. I know that Asian countries only have year round schooling and they have very high educational standards and I'd say that the students keep to those standards and do very well outside of school. I'd like to see what year round schooling could potentially do to school districs that have poor test scores. I think that year round schooling could be a very good option.
ReplyDeleteI think that year-round school is a great topic to write about. It has many benefits to it, and schools are slowly going to this type of school. I think that students would like school more if they had those small breaks in between school. They would have continuous learning, and I think that it would benefit them because they won't forget what they have learned.
DeleteWhat an interesting topic! I haven't read much into this topic, but I think it would be very interesting to see the benefits and cons of it. In your paper would you include how long the school day is a such because I think that would be very interesting. I look forward to seeing more on this topic.
DeleteI've never experienced year round schooling so I believe your paper will be very insightful. I like how you related it back to test scores. I can't imagine having to go to school year round. Your paper will be very interesting to read.
DeleteI think this would be very interesting! I have heard about this being an option before, but never really found out much information about it, so I can't wait to see what you find.
DeleteI would like to do multi-aged classrooms. I grew up in a private school where some grades were combined. Also, in college now, there are multi-aged classrooms due to the mix of freshman and seniors, or even older people go back to school in their later years. I actually had a 65 year old veteran that was in a lot of my classes. I love to be partnered with him because I could rely on him in group work and I looked up to him. He was very smart and a great leader. I would like to talk about the great benefit of multi-aged classrooms versus one age/grade classrooms. Multi-age classrooms benefit both the teacher and students and I plan to find statistics and other research on the benefit on multi-age classrooms. I really want this topic because I have been in this topic personally!
ReplyDeleteIt is different how in elementary school students are usually close in age, but as we get into college and even high school those ages seem to spread. I think one important topic that would need to be looked at when considering multi-aged classrooms is maturity level especially in a middle school when students are going through changes.
DeleteI really love this topic. I like how you have had a wide-range of ages in your classes, especially a 65 year old man. There are some challenges in multi-aged classrooms. Papers are usually easy to write when you have some personal connection to it.
DeleteWow, that is awesome that you have had class with such an experienced person! I think it will be very interesting to see how this paper turns out because it seems like you have a lot of personal experience with the topic.
DeleteI have been in some classrooms in High School that had more than one grade in it and I think that it definitely had some pros and cons, cant wait ti see what you find!
DeleteI would like to do my position paper on 4 day school weeks. I think this can be beneficial for a school district when considering budget which I will discuss in the paper. Also I will discuss how the fifth day of the week could be used. A few Missouri schools have switched to this system and I will have an opinion from a teacher who once taught in a 5 day school week that has now gone to a 4 day school week and see how he feels about the change. I will also discuss how the 4 day school week will may longer school day which would allow students to do more in-depth projects and allow teacher more time to explain a topic.
ReplyDeleteI know of one school near me that switched to 4 day school weeks last year. Budget was their reason for switching. I think this is a great topic because there is so much debate on it.
DeleteIt will be very interesting to see individual stories on switching from five to four day weeks. I haven't heard about this happening until this assignment came out, so I am interested to see how this paper turns out to learn more about the topic!
DeleteI had cousins that went to school in St. Charles. They attended a year round school. It was really cool because they always seemed to be on breaks. They seemed to enjoy it as well. I just wonder how it would change our school systems here and how it would affect students. Great topic!
DeleteSeeing as all my choices have been taken by others, I will choose what I am most interested in. I would like to do my paper on looping. It is something that I have not heard much about, but would like to learn. Based on the research I have already done, it is where teachers stay with their students for multiple years. I would like to do more research on how much this is beneficial to students and how many schools are doing it today. I had teachers in high school for more than one year, and I always liked having the teacher a second time because I was already used to their teaching style, test set up, etc. So, I think it would be very interesting to continue researching this topic and be able to write a paper on it.
ReplyDeleteThere are many benefits of looping, but there are also disadvantages. Many schools do it, but not every year. Looping can beneficial for students, but again there are disadvantages. There are two sides to look at looping: benefits and disadvantages.
